Shutterfly Upload for Lightroom Plug-in Feedback

    Just wondering if you’ve done any testing with the Creative Cloud version 5 of Lightroom. I’m using that on a Mac, and I’d love it if this would work.

    Hi – I downloaded your program and it worked great. That is, it worked great yesterday. Today, I’m getting an authentication error message. So, I disabled the seamless sign-in, per dialogue box suggestion. When I tried to upload the image again, I expectedly get a pop-up which asks me to manually enter my password. When I do this, it appears to take. However, a few seconds later I get the same error message: “The Shutterfly Upload plug-in was not allowed access to your account. Please re-authenticate, or turn off seamless sign-in, and try again”. I tried other things as well. For example, I disabled it and then re-enabled it. No luck. I logged out of Lightroom. Nada.

    If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

I haven’t been able to duplicate the problem myself, so I suspect that there may be intermittent issues on Shutterfly’s site that aren’t there when I go to look.     Thanks for the plugin. I have downloaded and used without issue with Shutterfly. The plugin isn’t working as I expected thought and wanted to run this by you. I shoot swimming photography so for parents to find their kids they look for certain age groups first. (I upload roughly 1000 from each event). When I used the plugin, the pictures got uploaded in a random order making it very difficult to narrow in or a particular kid. Is the the expected behavior? Is there a setting I need to click? Any help is appreciated.


    [Ray, your images will be exported and uploaded in the order they appear in your Lightroom folder or collection. However, Shutterfly controls the order in which they are displayed. Look for a “sort” tool somewhere on your Shutterfly page. For example, here’s what I see near the bottom of my “View and Organize” page:

    Hi Don, thanks so much for the plugin! I experienced the login/authentication issue that others have described, but fixed it using the “come back in a couple of hours and try again” method.

    And since I’ve seen it discussed, I’ll mention that I’m using Lightroom 5 (the latest version available with CC) on a Mac, and the plugin worked like a charm once the authentication was fixed.

    I tried using V1.4 of the plug in with Lightroom 5.7 but got the following error when attempting to enable the plug-in from the Plug-In Manager: “Could not upgrade your catalog for plug-in metadata. The plugin-specific metadata in this catalog is newer than what the installed version of this plugin supports”. Perhaps there is some incompatibility with the latest Lightroom 5.7 version?

    [I posted an answer to this problem almost two years ago, so I guess it’s time for a repeat 😉 :

    Open Lightroom’s Plug-in Manager and verify that the “Include 'folder' metadata” option is still enabled. This error will happen if your catalog has been updated to include the Shutterfly folder name, and

    1. you turn off the option, or
    2. you try to enable an earlier version of the plug-in.

    I’m having the same problem as Taymour Martin. The plugin has been working without any problem for months, but yesterday I suddenly couldn’t use it any longer. I get a message that the upload has failed and that the Shutterfly Upload plug-in was not allowed access to my account. As Taymour did, I disabled seamless sign-in, but this didn’t make any difference. I have tried re-authenticating 5 or 6 times, but that doesn’t help either. I also tried clicking on the “refresh” button and that seemed to work in terms of accessing my account, but didn’t make any difference in terms of the upload working. I tend to agree with you that the problem is probably on the Shutterfly end of things. Since I can reproduce this problem without any trouble, is there something I can do to collect some data for you so you can troubleshoot the problem or at least figure out what’s actually happening so you can provide a more accurate error message? I love your plugin and use it almost daily, so this is a huge problem for me. Please let me know if I can help to resolve this issue.


    [Thanks for passing along the trouble report, Nicole. There have been an increasing number of reports of intermittent upload errors that I have yet to be able to reproduce (but something is obviously going on). As you’ve figured out, the error is not related to the plug-in’s ability to access your account, contrary to the error message being reported.

    One user that I’ve been working with has reported that his failures have been associated with particular images — most will upload OK but a few will fail every time. He sent me a log of the problem which shows Shutterfly reporting that an “Unexpected exception” occurred. So, something “bad” happened on Shutterfly’s side, but I don’t know what. One curious thing pointed out by his log was that the timestamps indicate that the image being uploaded was extremely small or non-existent — less than a second elapsed between the time the upload request was made and the failure response was received. It makes me wonder if there could be a problem with the JPEG image that Lightroom generated for the export.

    So, what can you do?

    Try to characterize the failure. Does it happen all of the time? Only sometimes? Only particular images no matter how often you try?

    Send me a log demonstrating the error. See the FAQ for instructions (

    Verify that there are no problems with the Lightroom-generated images. In the Export dialog, under the “Export Location” section, choose an option other than “Temporary folder”. When you get an upload failure, go look at the generated image in the folder that you selected. Can you view it in an image viewer? Any signs of corruption, etc.? (Don’t forget to delete the folder and the generated images when you’re done with them.)

    If a failure seems to follow particular images, try resetting your Lightroom edits and try again (use a “snapshot” or “virtual copy” so you don’t lose your work). Does it make a difference?

    Love being able to upload directly to Shutterfly from Lightroom, but I was wondering if there could be an option to automatically use the date the photograph was shot as the Album for uploading. It would be useful to be able to select a batch of pictures shot on multiple days and not have to do them as separate exports so that they end up in separate albums on Shutterfly.

    I’m having the same problem as Nicole Mordecai. It happens all the time now. I can’t seem to upload any photos from lightroom to shutterfly after years of being able to do so with no problem. I did recently upgrade to Lightroom 5.7. Could that be part of the problem? Also, my photos in lightroom are .NEF files. Do I need to convert them to jpegs before exporting? I don’t remember having to do that before, though. Any additional information on this? I’m not sure what else to do in order to get my photos uploaded to the site.

    As for your questions, the problem could be related to the LR version, although I don’t have enough data to say (truthfully, I’m still running a much earlier v5.x release because I wanted to avoid other performance problems others reported following upgrades, and I haven’t been able to reproduce the reported upload problem). However, I can say that you do not need to convert to JPEGs first before uploading since LR is already doing that for you (however, the act of rendering your images to JPEGs may be introducing metadata that makes Shutterfly upset — see the referenced post).

    Anyway, try the work-around and let me know what happens! -Don]

    Just wondering if you’re still updating this AWESOME plugin? I used it to great effect in the past, but it is no longer compatible with the newest version of Lightroom CC. Any plans for this in the near future, or have you moved on to other projects? Either way, thank you for your contribution to the LR community!

Please send whatever details you can provide (error messages, log files, screen shots, etc.) to “don at don-mckee dot com” and I’ll see what I can find out. I must admit that I’m still an LR 5.x user, so can’t make any guarantees, but it’s worth taking a look! -Don

    I’m trying to figure out a way to use your plugin to upload directly to a shutterfly share site that I created. Do you know if that is possible? The only way I am seeing is if I upload to my shutterfly account and then add them to the share site from there. I would really like a “one click and walk away” option to go straight to the sharesite. I’m new to shutterfly and your your plugin, so maybe I’m just missing it.

    [Unfortunately, TJ, Shutterfly doesn’t provide a way for me to upload directly to a “Share Site”. As you’ve guessed, you first need to upload your images to your Shutterfly account, and then share them to the site. -Don]

    Hi Don,

    I’m currently using your plugin with LR 5.7. As with others above, it’s giving me the “reauthenticate” error message. I did try to change my metadata setting, but it did not work. Do you have any other suggestions?

    [Hi Andrea, In mid-October, I first received a report of upload problems resulting in an error message similar to this one:

    and I posted about it here. Essentially, Shutterfly broke something on their site (again). It’s been reported, but I haven’t heard anything from Shutterfly Support other than acknowledgement of my report.

    The work-around for now is to turn off “Seamless Sign-in” (see the plug-in help for more information). You’ll have to provide your user ID and password when you do uploads, but at least you’ll be able to upload. -Don]

    I’ve already replied in a direct email, but thought I’d share here, too, for the benefit of others who may stumble by.

    If you’re asking whether the plug-in works to upload, images, then the answer is “Yes!” However, the features of the plug-in related to “Seamless Sign-in” aren’t working due to changes on Shutterfly’s side, and their “Developer Support” has been AWOL for several years now. For more information, check out these posts:

    I try to respond to questions (like this one ) promptly, and offer help and troubleshooting when I can.

    On the other hand, if you’re asking if the plug-in is under active development, then the answer is “No.” What it is is likely all that it will ever be. I don’t use the plug-in much myself these days, and Shutterfly doesn’t seem to value 3rd party developers anymore. They don’t bother to respond to trouble reports, let alone do anything to try to fix them. Sigh.

    Anyway, if you’re having specific problems, let me know what they are, and I’ll try to help.
